What is different about plumbing here
Most Nairobi plumbing traces back to how water reaches the property. Supply across much of the city is rationed, so households depend on storage tanks, float valves and booster pumps — and those three are what fail. A tap with no pressure in Nairobi is more often an empty tank or a pump that has lost prime than a problem with the tap.
In apartments, the complication is shared infrastructure. A leak in one flat frequently originates in another, and pipework runs through walls and ducts the resident has no access to. Say early in the post if you are in a block, because it changes who needs to be involved before anything can be fixed.

What to check with a plumber
- Ask what they think is wrong before they start, and whether the quote covers parts
- For anything involving digging up a slab or re-routing pipework, ask who makes good the tiling or plaster afterwards
- A NITA trade test certificate (Grade III is the artisan entry level, Grade I the highest) is the standard Kenyan proof of a trade. Plenty of excellent fundis work without one, so treat it as a bonus rather than a bar.
- Agree the price on Help24 before work begins — that is the number the escrow holds, and it is the number that protects you if the job changes halfway
