An air conditioner that runs but does not cool is the most common post in this category, and it is rarely one thing. A blocked filter, a dirty outdoor coil, a failed capacitor and a genuine gas leak all present the same way from the inside.
Be wary of a diagnosis of "needs gas" over the phone. A sealed system does not consume refrigerant; if it is low, it has leaked, and a refill without finding the leak buys a few months at most. A good technician will say that themselves.
Servicing matters more here than in most categories. Coastal and lakeside installations in particular take a beating from salt and humidity, and an outdoor unit that is cleaned twice a year lasts substantially longer than one that is not.
