Welding in Mombasa

What is different about welding here

Gates, grilles, balcony railings and staircases rust visibly faster in Mombasa, and the corrosion usually starts where it cannot be seen — inside hollow sections, and at welds where the coating is thinnest.

Finish is therefore the question that matters most on coastal fabrication. Galvanised or properly powder-coated steel costs more than primed and painted, and on the coast the gap in how long it lasts is measured in years rather than months.

What people post

Welding jobs posted in Mombasa

Every one of these can be posted as a one-off job to Mombasa providers.

  • Window grilles and burglar-proofing
  • Gates: new, plus dropped hinges, broken latches and realignment
  • Staircase railings, balcony rails and balustrades
  • Water tank stands and platform frames
  • Carports, shade frames and canopies
  • Steel doors, security doors and door frames
  • Repairs to trailers, frames, brackets and machinery
  • Steel roofing trusses and purlins
  • Fences, posts and razor-wire frames

Writing the request

What to include so the offers come back usable

  • Measurements of the opening or the span
  • A photo taken square-on to the opening
  • The finish you want: primed and painted, galvanised, or powder-coated
  • Whether it is made on site or fabricated and delivered
  • Whether an old item has to be cut out and removed first

What moves the price

Why two quotes for the same job differ

  • Size, and the section and gauge of steel it needs
  • Design — plain bars against a pattern with scrollwork or laser-cut panels
  • Finish, which is often the difference between a five-year and a fifteen-year life
  • Whether there is power on site for the welder
  • Delivery, and getting something heavy up stairs

Help24 does not publish price ranges for welding. Quotes come from the welders themselves, and the number you agree is the number the payment is held against.

Before work starts

What to check with a welder

  • Confirm whether the price includes fitting, or only fabrication
  • For anything that people lean on — a balcony rail, a staircase — ask how it is fixed into the wall, not just how it is welded
  • Agree the finish in writing; "painted" and "powder-coated" are not the same promise
  • A NITA trade test certificate (Grade III is the artisan entry level, Grade I the highest) is the standard Kenyan proof of a trade. Plenty of excellent fundis work without one, so treat it as a bonus rather than a bar.

How Help24 works

Posting a welding job

1

Describe the job

Say what needs doing and where you are. Posting is free, and you are not committing to anything by posting.

2

Nearby welders send offers

Providers near you quote their own price. Nobody is assigned to you — you see the offers and you choose.

3

Agree the price first

Nothing starts until you have accepted an offer. The number you agree is the number that gets held.

4

Pay by M-Pesa, released when it's done

Help24 holds the payment while the work happens. The provider can see it is there; neither side can move it until you confirm the job is finished.
