For a fault, describe what the car is doing rather than what you think is broken. When it happens, what it sounds like, whether a warning light is on, whether it is worse cold or hot — those details are what a good mechanic diagnoses from, and they narrow a quote enormously.
Say whether the car can be driven to a garage or whether somebody has to come to it. Mobile mechanics and workshop mechanics are different answers, and a car that will not start needs the first one.

- Ask for the old parts back; it is the simplest way to confirm what was replaced
- For a pre-purchase inspection, use a mechanic with no connection to the seller
